Michael Phillips' book will be of great interest not only to scholars interested in Blake, but those interested in printmaking or writing poetry. An important contribution to understanding of the printing techniques Blake used to create the Songs of Innocence and the Songs of Experience, Phillips' book offers important insight into Blake's poetry. Far from being "dictated," Blake's beautiful poems were painstakingly crafted, with every revision masterful in paring down and paring back so that the poems in their entirety reflect what Blake called "the contrary states of the human soul." Clearly and beautifully written and painstakingly researched, this is not only one of the best books about Blake I have read, but one of the best books on the writing process.
