Though frequently misunderstood and often confused by no fewer than two cases of coincidence of names, Michelangelo Anselmi was the third most-important painter at the time of Correggio and Parmigianino in Parma. The creator of several altar paintings and entire cycles of frescoes in the cathedral, in the Cappella della Concezione, in Palazzo Lalatta, and in five chapels in the church of San Giovanni Evangelista,Anselmi spent his entire working life in Parma. The only exception was the Baptism of Christ in the church of San Prospero in Reggio Emilia, which was the companion piece for Correggio s Night, now in Dresden. The book gives a stylistic and iconographic analysis of his works and a detailed study of documentary sources, shedding doubt on the erroneous tradition that considered Michelangelo Anselmi as a painter of Sienese origin whose works were partly derived from those of Sodoma and Beccafumi.
